TecSalud, Google, BBVA, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and other institutions seek to augment the abilities of nurses, doctors, and healthcare professionals during the Covid-19 pandemic through the site www.preparateparasalvarvidas.org
On Monday, the BBVA Foundation, TecSalud’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences (EMCS), and the UNAM’s School of Medicine, supported by Google Cloud technology, created the initiative “Training ourselves to help. You too can save lives”.
With this initiative, the community in general, professional healthcare workers and those in training have access to training material during this health emergency through online programs and links of interest so that they can help with the task of treating those affected by this virus.
It is estimated that this specialized content for healthcare professionals could reach more than 50,000 people.
Lernit, a learning experience management technology platform for organizations, which relied on Google Cloud technology to launch the site, was used to share courses designed by TECSalud’s EMCS specialist physicians at Tecnológico de Monterrey.
According to the information provided, this platform allows users to learn and guaranteed continuous operation, regardless of peaks in demand.
Optimal operation of this page is important, as the objective is to train the greatest number of healthcare professionals so that they can help with the task of treating those affected by this virus.
Preparateparasalvarvidas.org also provides reliable information for the general public about the virus and pandemic, as well as prevention measures.
It is estimated that 200,000 people will access the information on this site.
The Technological Challenge
Google Mexico reported that one of the challenges was to launch it in three days due to the rapid spread of the virus.
“In just three days, a platform was launched that could host videos and content, and that in turn will be scalable to support high demand from users and specialists interested in training themselves,” said the company in a statement.
It added that Lernit, which develops learning experiences for organizations, together with Tecnológico de Monterrey, had to create a completely independent virtual machine (VM) hosted on Google’s infrastructure to add all the functions and make some modifications, since the platform turned out to be much more robust than had been contemplated.
Lernit relied on solutions such as Google Cloud Platform’s Firebase, which is a platform focused on the development of web and mobile applications. This tool also allows organizations to quickly and securely scale according to user demand.
In addition, they chose to use Google’s Cloud Firestore database, which gives developers more features, performance, and scalability in data management. Learnit also applied the benefits of the Google Cloud Functions solution, which allows developers to run and process code in the cloud or locally without the need for server storage so they can focus on their products rather than worrying about infrastructure management.
The BBVA Foundation has also presented preparateparasalvarvidas.org to health departments in Mexico City and other Mexican states so that it can be shared with more than 17,000 doctors and nurses.
For health professionals, the platform offers different courses in which they can acquire knowledge about the medical procedures needed to care for those affected by the pandemic and about the proper use of personal protective equipment.
The main objective of these materials is to support healthcare workers from different specialties, recent graduates, or current students to strengthen the healthcare teams currently treating coronavirus cases.
This platform will continue to be strengthened with further courses. A chatbot developed by experts from Tecnológico de Monterrey that could answer questions related to Covid-19 was also enabled.
