The food we eat not only influences our weight, but it is also indispensable for our brain’s well-being and therefore, the way we feel day by day.

Nutrition specialist Carlos Páez Martínez, from the Zambrano Hellion Hospital of TecSalud, shares some recommendations on foods containing the nutrients we need to activate our brains and help us feel good.

1             Tryptophan

Tryptophan is vital in producing serotonin, which produces good humor and learning. It’s found in foods such as fish, dairy products, turkey, eggs, bananas, dried fruit, pineapple, and avocado.

2             Folate

Folate, known as the happiness hormone, is also necessary for serotonin. It can be found in spinach and other leafy green vegetables.

3             Tyrosine

This substance is needed to create noradrenaline, which is a fundamental chemical in alertness processes. It’s found in cheese, eggs, and meat.

4             Choline

This essential nutrient is crucial for forming cell membranes, and can be found in foods such as soy, liver, and eggs.

5             Phenylalanine

Although some people are sensitive to it, this is needed for the dopamine essential to memory and learning. Among other foods, it’s found in soy, beetroot, and some grains.

6             Glutamine and flavonoids

Glutamine and flavonoids are found in foods such as pork and beef, and sesame and sunflower seeds. They help reduce neuron aging and improve memory.
