5G has officially come to the new Apple iPhone 12, and with it comes the possibility of improving connectivity speeds in cities with high population densities and in crowded areas such as sports or musical events.
On phones, the 5G network supports download speeds of up to 4 gigabits per second (gbps) under ideal conditions and upload speeds of up to 200 megabits per second (mbps).
Although it seems far off, the reality is that it will not be so long before the 5G mobile internet network can be used in Mexico. Telcel will be the first to operate it in Mexico at the end of this year.
Not only would Apple benefit from this network, but so would other companies such as Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Motorola, which already have equipment compatible with this fifth-generation mobile network.
According to a study carried out by the GSMA Association, 5G has lots of growth potential within the region and, according to its estimates, it will achieve penetration of 7% by 2025. The investments that will be made in the development of this technology in Latin America will be around 60.3 billion dollars.
Brian Trzupek, Senior Vice President of Product at DigiCert, says that as telecommunications, manufacturers and other organizations adopt models of this type, the scalability they need to be able to migrate to 5G will be more flexible and faster.
The company provides solutions which allow telecommunications providers to implement 5G network services in different environments and maintain security and performance thanks to the use of cloud technology.
“We know that the 4G network cannot support the growing volume of mobile devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT), so 5G connectivity will be responsible for this task, helping to increase the number of connected devices and applications,” said Trzupek.
In a statement, the Verizon company –which announced its partnership with Apple on Tuesday– indicated that the Verizon 5G Nationwide service is now available to more than 200 million customers in 1,800 cities across the United States.
“From the beginning, our focus has been on building a transformative 5G network that will dramatically reshape society. Today’s announcement brings us one step closer to the future. We could not be happier in sharing this news in collaborations with Apple: to be able to provide iPhone 12 customers with access to speeds and experiences only possible with 5G,” said Hans Vestberg, CEO of Verizon.
5G and its high price
In 2020, most manufacturers have started to launch 5G smart phones, but if there is one thing which distinguishes the handsets which already incorporate this type of network it is that their price exceeds 23,000 pesos.
The Samsung S20 Ultra is the only 5G model from the company which has come to Mexico, but it is not the only one that exists. The price of this handset is 29,999 pesos. The Chinese company Huawei earlier launched the P40 Pro and the Pro+, which cost 24,999 and 29,999 pesos.
Last week, Xiaomi announced that it will bring the Mi 10 to Mexico. It is a device that incorporates 8K video recording functions and is 5G-enabled. According to the company, this will improve the user experience, performance, and allow for greater energy efficiency.
Despite the fact that 5G equipment is usually considered high-end, Motorola has brought the Edge model to the Mexican market. It is the first upper-middle-range device, costing 15,999 pesos.
