Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.- Perhaps you’ve turned to YouTube more than once to learn a language, to find answers to your questions about history or outer space, to find out how to bake a cake, or even how to solve mathematical problems. The people who can quench this thirst for knowledge are referred to by the video platform as “EduTubers”.

Channels such as Julioprofe, Math2me, Pasos por ingeniería, Educatina and Aula365 form part of the community of creators on YouTube that offer users educational content on a variety of disciplines.

“By sharing their passion and knowledge over their channels, the creators are sending a clear message: no matter their users’ whereabouts, age, sex or financial status, they will always have access to knowledge. The only thing that matters is being curious and willing to invest time and effort in learning,” said Antoine Torres, head of educational content partnerships in Latin America, during YouTube EduCon LATAM in Rio de Janeiro.

“EduTubers are revolutionizing education. They’re democratizing learning”, he said.

A space for creative minds

This fusing of educational creators’ experiences and knowledge took place at YouTube Space.

Located in the Porto Maravilha in Rio de Janeiro, YouTube Space is a work and collaboration space specially designed for those generating content for the platform who have over 10,000 subscribers.

Forums and recording studios equipped with cameras, lighting and a variety of sets, editing consoles, a cafeteria, a virtual reality room and a cinema are just some of the attractive, innovative resources made available to creators to help them develop their content.

The YouTube Space in Rio de Janeiro stands out for being the most active in the world, albeit with fierce competition from others in Berlin, Dubai, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Toronto.

Influencers trained in empowerment

EduCon is an event whose purpose is to use conferences and workshops to empower and polish creators’ capacities and skills. Approximately 170 EduTubers from different parts of Latin America and Spain attended this year.

Antoine says that EduTuber community statistics are encouraging.

In 2018, videos with “how to” in their titles generated 4.5 trillion hours of viewing on the platform.

According to Torres, another of this niche’s growth factors is that 80% of users in Latin America mention YouTube as their first choice for learning something new.

For the purpose of generating professional growth among these creative spirits, topics like how to monetize content on and outside YouTube, brand rapport and relationships, and platform content innovations were discussed during the event.

YouTube without distractions

One of the innovations announced during EduCon was the Learning Playlists function.

YouTube has now implemented this function (in Beta on certain channels), which automatically blocks non-educational content for the purpose of preventing distractions to learning on the platform. The playlists contain only educational content.

In 2018, YouTube invested 20 million dollars to create a better platform experience for the creators and users of educational content.
